Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted in ages, but I've been busy with school. This will be my last year of university... thank god. I hate assignments, I hate early morning classes, and I hate not getting paid! Anyway, on top of keeping up with my boring school work I have managed to work on a few online projects.

I have been working on CrowdedCollege.com for a while now and it's finally ready for the public. It's still a work in progress but I figure I'll deal with the issues when they arise. Once again I am not a formally trained web designer/programmer. I'm just very inquisitive and there's lots of info out there on the web!

CrowdedCollege.com was created to fulfill the need for user generated information that's short, succinct, and simple. It asks the question, "What did you learn today?" Abstracts are written by the community and they must be less than 100 words. Users are ranked based on the popularity of their abstract and additional points are gained through site activity, i.e. making comments, adding friends, etc. Each month, the most popular user will be given a scholarship which is a portion of the site's advertising revenue. The more money the site generates, i.e. through advertising, alumni donations, etc., the more scholarships available! So check it out... let me know what you think.

Adding Related Posts and Post Rating Widget to Blogger

So I've taken on some of my own advice and added a post rating widget to my blogger posts. I'm actually liking how it looks with the rest of the site. The widget that I went with was developed by Outbrain. They have some really cool stuff that you can add to your blogger blogs. Anyway, if you go to Outbrain - Get a free related links widget and follow the steps that they outlined, everything is done automatically. You don't even need to go into your theme and edit anything... well unless you want to move the widget elsewhere besides the end of your post or put it in some other weird places on your site.

What I Drink at Work

What I Drink at Work is a site about... well what the author drinks at work... or drinks in general. Just a tip, you may also want to rehydrate with water in between your sugar highs. OK I actually really like the content of this site and yes we are following the trend of food and beverages today.

This site has a focus. It's simple yet offers the readers quite a bit of information on drinks that I have never even heard of before like... Donkey Spitz, Koala Jin, and Maba Yaba... OK I just made that up but seriously there are some interesting drinks the author has covered. Personally, I'm not brave enough to ingest some of that stuff.

This site is good BUT.....

Here's what I would like changed:

1. The layout is a bit boring. C'mon man spice it up a little - add some colour - inject it with horse manure! Do something!

2. You need to social network. If you want more readers or even just visitors, you might want to try and contact other blogs that are similar to yours. It doesn't matter how good your content is, if you don't have visitors, you're not going to make any money!

3. As with the previous review, sites like these need a rating system. I am also partial to 3 column layouts... but that's just my preference.

Well there's my opinion... even if you didn't ask for it. Seriously, what is Jerky Perky? Go to What I drink at work to find out.

Fuss Free Cooking

Fuss Free Cooking is another one of those food blogs. It does have some good simple food ideas, but sometimes the food doesn't appear to be overly simple. However, the site does have some really good food pictures and the design layout is nice and clean.

BUT....

This is what I would like changed:

1. Move the sidebar to the right of the content. People read left to right and if you put your sidebar on the left then it just gets ignored thereby losing opportunity for making money online with advertisement. Afterall, isn't that the whole goal of blogging these days?

2. Add "star rating" or any kind of post rating system to your layout. People love to vote, especially when you have a blog about things that people can vote on, i.e. this food is good vs. this food is crap... you get the idea. Which reminds me... I need to add that to this blog.

3. Focus your content. Yes I know that this is a "food blog" but you need to make it stand out from the rest. This can be achieved by using a unique writing style, or focus on one category of food, i.e. muffins or donkey platters... I don't know... you figure it out.

OK there are a lot more things I can point out about this blog but I'll just keep to my 3 timbits review for now. In the meantime, check out Fuss free cooking and let me know what else you find.

One of the simplest ways to search engine optimize your blogger or blogspot template is to play around with your blog titles. If you're using a blogger hosted blog then you will notice that on your individual pages the homepage blogger title is displayed first and your individual post title is displayed second. This is particularly bad for SEO purposes because the homepage title of your blog will always appear before your individual page title in the results.

If you're using a K2 Modify blogger template then here's how you SEO your blog title:

Go to 'layout' > 'edit html > search for this set of codes

FIND:

REPLACE WITH:

Now your blog will show "Title of Your Page: Title of Your Blog" instead of "Title of Your Blog: Title of Your Page."

It's a simple modification but a very powerful one. Test it out and tell me what you think!

How to Put Comment Form at the End of Blogger Post

Most of you have noticed by now that Blogger has the option of displaying the comment form at the end of your blogspot post. This feature is much more convenient and user friendly than the old style where when you click on the comment link it takes you to a different page. If you're using a K2 Modify blogger template than here's how you add this feature to your blog! It's really easy!

1. Go to your blogger user panel > click on 'settings' > click on 'comments' > check 'embeded below post'

2. Click on the 'layout' tab > check 'expand widgets template' > search for these set of codes:

FIND:

REPLACE WITH:

Save your template > You're Done!

It's that simple! Try it out and let me know how it goes!

The other day I stumbled upon this really cool website called Mind of Malloy. I just love how the website is laid out! As you all know I'm a big fan of dark colours because it makes a statement and this just shouts "sophistication and mystery." I'm thinking of adapting this template for Blogger in the future with some K2 Modify modifications of course :) Anyway, here's the screenshot of the masterpiece template below! I especially like the way he styled the photo gallery on the right side bar and the additional search function that's seemlessly incorporated into the template.

Well it's been awhile since I posted a new K2 Modify 3 column blogspot template. This design reflects on what I'm trying to do with my life at the moment - getting rid of all the clutter and keeping things simple. Clean Videos is a second generation "Basic Black Youtube Template." I've cleaned up some of the code and completely changed it 180 from a black colour scheme to a white one. You can change the video header by simply "expanding template widget" and then cutting and pasting your favourite videos thus replacing the ones I have there. This blogger template is 100% free and I encourage you to play around with it to make it your own!

Easy way to add Adsense for search into Blogger/Blogspot template

For some odd reason, when I tried to add the Adsense for search box html/javascript code directly into my blogger template xml it would not appear. So I found a really simple hack from Blogger Buster. I've just added a few more screenshots for the xml illiterates (like myself) to make things a lot easier. Here's the easy way to add adsense for search into your own blogger/blogspot blogs right above the first post, just like I have there!

1. Click on the "Layout" tab in your blogger control panel.

2. Click the "Edit HTML" link.

3. Scroll down until you see showaddelement='no'

4. Change "no" to yes.

If you click on the "Page Element" link (still inside your "Layout" tab) you will notice "Add a new page element" above your "Blog Post" box has now appeared. Now you can add any page element you want. To add a search box simply choose the html/javascript element and add your code and save. That's it! Simple huh? Adding an Adsense for search box allows your user to easily search your website while giving you another opportunity to make some more money online!

Blogspot Template Design Contest?

How many of you would be interested in an amateur design contest where the readers pick the winner? I'm willing to give away $100 US to the best brand new Blogspot design. I want to get at least 10 entries before readers are able to vote for their favourite new blogger layout. If enough people are interested I'll run the contest for the month of April! I know $100 is not a lot of money, but I am a poor student afterall! I started K2 Modify at the end of July 2007 as an experiment to see if an average Joe like myself can learn Blogger XML and challenge the creative side of me. I did not expect people to visit this site nor did I think anybody would download and use my blogger themes! The traffic to this site has grown tremendously over the past couple of months and it's all thanks to you guys!

I love the blue accent against the charcoal background! Webbie Tips contains useful resources for blog webmasters so check out her site - I'm sure we all can learn a thing or two from Mia!

3rd Template Column Disappearing in Edit Mode

Hello Readers, I want to draw your attention to something important regarding some of the K2 Modify 3 Column blogger templates. I guess Blogger.com recently did a massive change to their system and because of that when you go into "Edit Html" the 3rd column widget disappears thus not allowing you to edit the 3rd column. If anybody knows how to fix this please let me know and I will dedicate an entire post to you. Thanks so much.

Classic Problogger Blog Template

One of my favourite blog templates was the Classic Problogger template at Problogger.net. However, Darren Rowse, the owner of Problogger.net decided to update the look of his blog a while back. So as a tribute to his old Problogger template, I decided to create a Classic Problogger template version for Blogger. The original was created for Wordpress blogs. I made some minor changes like put the sidebar on the right and used a slightly different font in the header navigation links. Like all K2 Modify templates, this one is highly customizable and has been tested in Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Apple Safari. Below you can see the screenshot of Darren's classic Problogger template on the left and the Classic Problogger template for Blogger on the Right.

Poop Brown Blogger Template

I think one of the ugliest blogger template designed was this one. It just so happens that it was included in the list of already made templates that blogger offers its users at the time of sign up which means that thousands of people have used this poop brown template to display their chosen craft.

Every time I come to a blog that has a template that is not visually appealing I just leave no matter how good the content is. Now I'm not saying that my templates are the best but it sure beats this poop brown mess. You can totally change the look of your blog by simply changing a few colours. Also, please remove the blogger bar at the top of your blog - it's distracting.

How to Change the Blog Template Header

As clones of my Blogger templates pop up all over the Blogoshere, I thought it would be important to show you how you can add a personal touch to your Blog by simply changing your blog’s header! No matter what K2 Modify Blogspot theme you’re using, you can easily change the header by changing this tiny little XML code in your EDIT HTML Blogger.com panel. The 2 easy steps are outlined below:

Step 1: Go to your EDIT HTML panel in Blogger and scroll down until you find this bit of code:

#headr {
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
position: relative;
height: 200px;
background: #FFFFFF url('http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w255/everyadam/building-blocks.png') no-repeat bottom center;
}

Step 2: To change the header all you have to do is delete http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w255/everyadam/building-blocks.png and insert the location of your new header! If you don’t want a picture in your header and instead just want a simple one colour background, you can simply delete everything after #FFFFFF and replace it with your favourite HEX colour code so that it looks like this:

background: #FFFFFF;
}

The default is set to ‘white’ (#FFFFFF).

1. Expand your template widget by clicking on the tiny box to the top right corner of your edit HTML panel.
2. Scroll down until you see this set of codes (click on the picture below to see the detail):

Editor's Note: I've tested this out and it works perfectly. Make sure you close your tags properly if you decide to delete things from this layout. All you need to do is delete the URL and add your own, but keeping the ' ' between the URL or it will give you an error.

How to Change the K2 Header

Changing the K2 header is now easier than ever with this easy to follow instructions and screenshots!

Step 1: Click on the TEMPLATE tab and then go to EDIT HTML.

Step 2: Scroll down until you find the #header code in the html box. Step 3: Delete the URL in the header and replace it with the location of your new header.

Step 4: Click PREVIEW to see your changes and if you like it, click save.

Editor Notes: For the 3 column K2 Blogger templates make sure the size of your header is 1024px by 200px. For the 2 column K2 Blogger templates make your header 760px by 200px. As always, please back-up your Blogger templates before making any major changes!

"Baby in a Box" was photographed by Chick Harrity in 1978 and it marked one of the most memorable images that came out of the Vietnam War. This photo depicts a baby girl named Tran Thie Het Nhanny, who was born with a congenital heart defect, lying in a cardboard box next to her brother. Both lying there begging on the dirty streets of Saigon. What's sad is that the dish next to her box is empty signifying that humans can be so heartless sometimes. Nhanny later was brought to the US where she was adopted. She later on had heart surgery due to the generosity of the American public who actively raised money to give her that opportunity. Nhanny now lives in Ohio. Whatever happened to her brother, the forgotten soldier?

Dark Angel II

This is a different variation on the Dark Angel 3 column Blogger theme. It's the same colour scheme as Dark Angel but the header is slightly different. For some reason, I just think the photograph is quite moving. It almost seems peaceful in some ways.

How to Upload a New Blogger Template

I know you're all tired of seeing the same Blogger templates being used on every blog. Now there's a way to stand out from the crowd! Just simply download a FREE K2 Modify template and you're no longer lost in the sea of ordinary! Just follow these 5 easy steps:

Step 1: Choose the Blogger template that you like!
Step 2: Click on the "Download" link to download a ".txt" file!
Step 3: Log on to your Blogger account if you haven't already done so. Now you're at your Dashboard. Click on the "layout" link to your blog.
Step 4: Click on the "Edit HTML" link under the "Template" tab.
Step 5: Click on the "Expand Widget Template" box. Delete everything in the template box and replace it with all the text in the ".txt" file that you downloaded in Step 1.

Preview it and if you're satisfied with the results you can save it. Voila! You're DONE!

Always back-up your old Blogger templates by saving them elsewhere (i.e. notepad) before making any permanent changes!!
